Slouching Toward Thanksgiving

What is significant about Junior speaking up in class?  How does Mr Dodge reply and how does this make Junior feel?

  1. The thing that is significant about Junior speaking up is that he shows he is smart. He shows the class that he is not some dumb indian. Mr.Doge replys by freaking out on him. His face gets all red and angry because he is wrong. It makes Junior feel unimportant.

    1. I agree with you, it also reveals how racist he is because when Gordy speaks up, he calms down and thanks Gordy, but says nothing to Junior.

    3. I also agree. it shows how racist everyone is. It's sad that even when he is right that they shut him out because of his race.

  2. It's significant because nobody thinks that he's be smart since they're all mostly prejudiced against Junior. Mr. Dodge reacts by assuming Junior doesn't know what he's talking about. Then Gordy says that Junior is right, and Mr. Dodge then thanks Gordy. It reveals that Mr. Dodge is a prick..

    1. I agree with you kaylala. i agree because thats kind of what i said but yours in a short and right to the point version. Thats is true because Junior just isnt good enough for Mr. D so someone else has to speak up for him to believe Junior. Not right but i agree with you!

    2. I agree with you. Mr. Dodge didn't think that Junior was that smart, and he didn't believe him

  4. What is significant about Junior speaking up and not being shy is everyone found out that Junior was smart. Junior is smart because he corrects the teacher Mr Dodge and since the Mr. Dodge doesnt believe Junior he turns to the smartest kid in class Gordy. Gordy tell Mr Dodge that Junior was wright and when Gordy told him that Mr.D turned pale, He went from very red to snow white. Mr Dodge was not going to believe Junior at first he was very angery with him.

  5. The significance of Junior speaking up in his class is that it shows he is actually smart and brave. Mr Dodge reacts by making him feel dumb, he doesn't believe him. But when the smartest kid in school says that Junior is right, He gets embarassed.

    2. I also agree Teanna, being brave and expressing his thoughts to the class was a good thing for him.

  6. it is significant because everyone stereotypes junior as just some dumb indian kid that doesnt know anything. Even though Junior shows that he is really smart, Mr Dodge puts him down and make him feel stupid.

  7. When Junior speaks up in class it shows that he's smart and brave. The way Mr. Dodge replys is that his face gets all red. It kind of makes him a little scared, but when Gordy says that Junior's right. Junior seems happy because he's excited he got it right and that he proved the teacher wrong.

    1. I disagree with that because wasn't junior mad that the teacher was mad at him when he was right but then the teacher was not mad when Gordy got it right?

  8. Its significant because he speaks up to show his intelligence, he's not "just a dumb indian" like they think. Mr Dodge reacts by calling him out and making him feel stupid and embarrassed. He's judging him.

  10. soooooo... This kind of was like ' what the heck" but like he talks up in class and the teachers like "what ev's" then a white child says he agrees he's like "oh my goodness youre soooo right!" ( I know thats not what he actually says..) people kind of judged a book by its cover.. which is never right

  11. I think it took a lot of courage for junior to speak up. He is kind of scared of everyone and thinks everyone does not like him. Mr. Dodge is being mean by telling him he is wrong. He is only getting mad cause he knows he is right and because he is Indian. when Gordy tells the teacher that junior is right and the teacher listens to Gordy it makes junior mad.

    2. I agree with Adam because he shouldnt have told him that he was wrong. Even if he did tell him he was then appologize for being wrong.

  12. Junior speaking up in class to prove a teacher wrong would take a lot of courage and assurance. Even though he knew he was right, the teacher pretty much said he was well aware that it wasnt true, until Gordy got into it and the teacher believed him because he was white. Junior probably felt inferior toward the class and the teacher at first.

  13. junior decided to speak up for himself, which in almost anything in life is hard to do. but the racist teacher was like "no you're wrong" but then gordy said that he was and the racist teacher got shot down and was all butthurt and he said "oh ok yeah he is right" so yeah its not right maaaan

  14. It's significant because Junior doesnt usually speak out in front of the class. It shows that Junior is really smart. I think that Mr. Dodge overreacts by telling Junior that he is wrong. Then, Gordy said that Junior was right, but Mr. Dodge didnt appologize for telling him he was wrong.

  15. It shows Junior has a head on his shoulders and that his teacher is a racist cus he listens to the white kid in a different way then he listens to Junior and that bothers him
